Gunners news: Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal

Stalemate sees Gunners slip up in top four chase

The visitors' attack spurned numerous opportunities to take the lead, but a resolute defensive display from the Villans ensured that the points were shared at Villa Park

CL - Arsenal FC v Montpellier Herault SC, Arsene Wenger

The visitors often looked the more likely side to take the lead, but with chances spurned by the likes of Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, it soon became clear that it wasn’t going to be the Gunners’ day.
Villains manager Lambert elected to stick with the team that lost to Manchester City last weekend, with the exception of Karim El-Ahmadi, who came into midfield at the expense of Stephen Ireland. For the visitors, Jack Wilshere was rested and Theo Walcott failed to recover from a shoulder injury, whilst starts were handed to young full-backs Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson.
The first real chance of the match fell to the hosts, as a fantastic corner from Ashley Westwood found the head of the Christian Benteke, who jumped well but was unable to test Wojciech Szczesny in the Gunners’ goal.
Arsenal then created a chance of their own, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain broke in behind the Villa defence before eventually finding Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman did well to work space for a shot from just inside the penalty area, but Brad Guzan managed to get his body behind the strike.
Both sides almost broke the deadlock just before the break. First the Villains had the ball in the back of the net, as a Ciaran Clark strike from a well-worked free-kick was turned in by Andreas Weimann. To the Austrian's disappointment, however, he was correctly adjudged to have been offside.
Moments later, Lukas Podolski drove a cross into the box and found Laurent Koscielny in acres of space. The Frenchman struggled to adjust his feet and could only manage to smash the ball high into the stands despite being unmarked on the six-yard-box.
The visitors raced out of the starting blocks for the second period, as some neat play between Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud led to a shooting opportunity for the former, but the Spaniard fired narrowly wide of Guzan's top corner.
But Lambert's men continued to push for a goal of their own and were almost gifted one as Weimann managed to find Agbonlahor just yards from the Arsenal goal. The striker was under pressure from the Gunners’ defence, however, and struck straight at Szczesny.
The Poland international then pulled of a magnificent save to keep the scores level, as Holman unleashed a powerful 25-yard drive towards goal which the keeper tipped on to the crossbar with his fingertips.
Despite a flurry of late bursts from the visitors, Villa's defence continued to hold strong and earned their side a vital Premier League point.

Gunners news: Arsenal 2-0 Montpellier

Wilshere & Podolski strikes send Gunners through

Arsene Wenger's side cruise into the knockout stages with a comfortable victory over the Ligue 1 champions as Schalke beat Olympiakos in Wednesday night's other Group B fixture

Podolski Arsenal

Over a year of injury-ravaged frustration was etched on Wilshere’s face as he celebrated poking the Gunners ahead in the 49th minute before Lukas Podolski sealed the win with a stunning volley on 66 minutes.

Schalke’s win over Olympiakos on Wednesday night means that Arsenal are guaranteed a place in the second round ahead of their final Group B fixture in Athens on December 5.

It was a low-key but efficient display from the Gunners as they recorded their first home win against French opposition in 15 seasons in the Champions League against a hard-working yet toothless Montpellier side.

There were, however, some furrowed brows on the Arsenal bench during a turgid first half in which the hosts lacked intensity off the ball and failed to find any rhythm in their passing and possession.

In the 10th minute, Arsene Wenger’s side nearly opened the scoring but Laurent Koscielny’s header rattled against the crossbar after he met Wilshere’s fine cross from the left.

The only other half-chances of note in the first period fell to Podolski, who scuffed wide after robbing a Montpellier defending of possession and then could not wrap his foot around the ball after latching on to Santi Cazorla’s pass.

Arsenal responded to Wenger’s half-time team talk after the break as they came out with far more verve and creativity, with Cazorla and Wilshere in particular looking to open up the visitors’ defence.

In the 49th minute, the Gunners broke the deadlock as Wilshere scored for the first time since his strike in the 4-2 victory over Aston Villa on November 27, 2010.

Thomas Vermaelen floated in a dangerous right-footed cross that former Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud headed down perfectly for Wilshere’s run. The midfielder made the finish look simple as he flicked the ball over Montpellier goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren.

Jourdren would have been forgiven for diving out of the way of the strike that all but sealed the result in the 67th minute. Podolski worked a clever one-two with Giroud and struck a scorching volley from 12 yards that seemed to be increasing in speed as it slammed into the back of the net.

Giroud almost made it three against the club for which he scored 25 goals last season late on, but the Frenchman’s low right-footed strike was saved by Jourdren as the angles narrowed.

The £12 million man was applauded by all corners of the ground as he was substituted six minutes from time. Job done for Arsenal but tougher challenges will await as they progress to the knockout rounds for the 13th consecutive season.

Gunners news: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

Giroud & Walcott punish 10-man Spurs to seal vital comeback win

The visitors took the lead through Emmanuel Adebayor but a red card for the striker after just 20 minutes allowed the Gunners to claim a convincing win against their local rivals

EPL: Olivier Giroud , Arsenal v Tottenham

Adebayor put Tottenham in front in the 10th minute but the former Arsenal turned from hero to zero eight minutes later as he was sent-off for a dangerous challenge on Santi Cazorla.

From that point on, Arsenal took complete control and were 3-1 up by half-time thanks to goals from Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

Santi Cazorla, the Gunners’ Spanish magician, scored the fourth on the hour mark and Theo Walcott added the fifth in the closing stages either side of a Gareth Bale strike that will offer little consolation to Tottenham supporters.

The final score mirrors the same fixture last season, the turning point in Arsenal’s campaign, and takes the Gunners up to sixth in the Premier League, two points ahead of Spurs.
The boos that have greeted recent Arsenal performances here were replaced by a sound of ‘Ole’ as Arsene Wenger’s side toyed with their great rivals, a renewed optimism sweeping around the red half of north London.

It all started so well for Tottenham as they controlled the early exchanges and took the lead in the 10th minute. Jermain Defoe raced on to a long ball as the Arsenal defence stood statuesque and after his shot was saved by Wojciech Szczesny, Adebayor scrambled in the rebound.

But Spurs’ afternoon fell apart eight minutes later. Adebayor, clearly pumped up for the occasion as he was taunted by the home fans, could have no complaints after being sent-off by referee Howard Webb for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Cazorla.

From then on, Arsenal were dominant, teasing their neighbours and creating chances at will with their use of the ball in midfield.

In the 24th minute, Mertesacker levelled with a towering free header from 12 yards that nestled in the top corner after good work down the right from Walcott.

Hugo Lloris, making just his second league start in the Tottenham goal, had to be alert to make two excellent saves to deny Giroud but the Gunners eventually took the lead they deserved in the 42nd minute. Podolski tricked his way into the the penalty area and his shot flicked off the foot of William Gallas and spun fortuitously into the far corner. It was one of the more ugly goals seen in this stadium but few have been greeted with such a guttural roar.

On the stroke of half-time, Giroud made sure there was no way back for Spurs. The French striker, a constant menace throughout the game, was simply too sharp for the visitors’ centre-backs as he fired home Cazorla’s cross at the near post.

Villas-Boas responded by switching to three at the back during the break but his players were simply unable to stem the tide as Arsenal exploited the space created by their man advantage.

On the hour mark, Arsenal worked the ball to Podolski on the left and the German produced a perfect low cross from the left for Cazorla to score from eight yards to make it 4-1.

Bale fired in Spurs’ second of the game after a fine run but by that point Arsenal were going through the motions, conserving their energy ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Montpellier.

There was still time for Walcott to add a fifth with his right foot following a scorching run by substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. A potentially season-changing result for both sides of north London.

GERMANY. Nideggen - a city of red stone ....

the last day we traveled not only to places that are familiar to me and which I have already written, but for me it was the discovery of a small town Nideggen, located 23 km from Euskirchen, in the picturesque foothills of the Eifel. As can be seen from a poster at the gate of the old - the city we were greeted warmly!

The first mention of this place dates from the 1184 year. Count Wilhelm II Jülich founded Nideggen castle and town, which on Christmas Day 1313 has received city rights. Then the city wall was built with four vovorotami, three of which (Nyckstor, Dürener-and Zülpicher Tor) survived to date. Now the population is 10,684 people.

по стараму городку Нидегген..

because of the weather on this day (incidentally the only rainy day for 2 weeks over 30 degree heat), we were Nideggen about 6 pm, so the street lights - that's the unusual, the lights.

I think that even the pictures can be seen that the buildings are built of red stone - the fact that the town is located on the cliffs of red sandstone and mainly used in construction .....

по стараму городку Нидегген..

come across the typical course in the area half-timbered houses, like so - that was a very nice restaurant

Open up the old door in the old red wall, and we are in the old part of town ....

but these are the most Eifel which I have mentioned many times, but this particular view from a cafe terrace,

on the terrace was a small lily pond .....

refreshed - we go for a walk through those double doors cool - we'll see the city ....

in the courtyard, I saw just such a pastoral picture .....
despite the rain, the fountain has worked in all ....

Church of St. John .....

and this is from the same church door handles in the form of praying people (incidentally, I met a whole collection of unusual door handles ....)

Almost all the buildings and walls are made of red natural stone, which can not be found within 20 kilometers is from this place, and this red color gives an unusual view - with another location just can not be confused .... A little later we went down the path below and see These red rocks of which the city and built

on the protection of the city .....

but in this picture, where the fern his way bring together a rock wall, I end this walk through the city Nideggen, but not least .....
The city flower bed ....

one of three surviving city gates - the red stone, and as the situation with heavy bars.
the gate was now a "Trojan horse" - instead of the eye - the Euro, why would it?
but the gate leading to the castle Nideggena - which separate conversation .....
